Lyme Disease and Coinfections

Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is transmitted through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. However, Lyme disease can sometimes be complicated by coinfections, which are additional infections transmitted by the same tick bite. These coinfections may include other bacteria, parasites, or viruses such as Babesia, Bartonella or Rickettsia (Rocky Mountain spotted fever).

Naturopathic approaches to managing Lyme disease typically involve a combination of holistic treatments aimed at supporting the body’s natural healing processes, strengthening the immune system, and addressing the symptoms associated with the disease. Nutrition, stress management, and detoxification are key aspects of health to work on to holistically approach Lyme and coinfections.
